Iranian plan under study to provide Lebanon with 100 MW: report - Lebanon Daily Star

BEIRUT: A plan by Iran designed to produce 1,600 MW for Syria, Iraq and Lebanon is under study, the Tehran-based Mehr News reported Thursday.

According to the Iranian news agency, the plan would provide Lebanon with 100 MW, Syria with 500 and I,000 MW for Iraq.

The project was discussed Wednesday between the Syrian and Iranian energy ministries in a bid to lay the foundation for the electricity plan.

Lebanon produces 1,500 MW, far less than the country’s consumption, which exceeds 2,400 MW.

Lebanon’s endemic power cuts worsened earlier this year as maintenance work on several production units took their toll on electricity supply.

In January, Iran renewed its proposal to help the country with its deteriorating electricity condition.

The Islamic Republic's plan would see production of 1,500 MW by exporting energy to Lebanon via neighboring Syria and building additional power plants to bridge the wide gap between production and consumption.

However, Lebanon has not accepted Iran’s proposal yet. Iran’s envoy to Lebanon says his country is still waiting for a response from Lebanon regarding the proposal, originally presented in 2010.
